Being a new business owner is exciting and there's understandably a good possibility of getting overwhelmed when you first start out with all the things you have to do just to get up an running. So, it's a good idea to keep lists of the steps you need to take to ensure that you start out (and continue) on the right foot. One of the initial tasks that should absolutely be done is the creation of your sales materials. It's actually one of the less expensive chores that you can do on a professional level, but material with good, compelling copy will be one of the best ways to get your potential customers in the door, so to speak. So, grab those brochures that are gathering dust on your desk, get some brochure holders and start using them to bring in new business.

So, what do you do with all those brochure holders? You approach business owner, establishments - anyone whom you think might be interested in your product or service - and ask them if they'll allow you to display your brochures in their location.

The list that you compile must be businesses that are compatible with your product or service, though. You may really like that flower store that you frequent, but it's probably not the best choice to display your organic dog food brochures.

The key is to work smart and not hard. You want to align yourself with as many compatible businesses as possible and build exposure for your business. You can't make any sales if no one knows you exist, right?

Once you have your brochures plastered all over town, do you just leave them there and wait patiently for the phone calls to start pouring in? No. Now is the time to be proactive and follow up regularly with the locations where your brochures are displayed.

You want to carefully monitor the location so that you can assess whether you've made a good choice. A good choice meaning there's actually been some response to the brochures. You will make regular visits to replenish supplies, if necessary, and to also assess whether or not you need to find a new location if one isn't getting the response you'd like.

Also, get in the habit of keeping lots of brochures with you at all times. You want to be prepared for any questions about your business and have a plan for directing customers to your materials instead of having to give long, drawn explanations about what it is you do.

People generally don't like to feel they're being sold on something. It's best to have them review your materials, make their own decision to find out more about your business and basically sell themselves on what you have to offer. If you've done a good job at targeting your prospects, then they will eventually see that you do actually have something of value that they want or need.
