Affiliate programs have never been more popular. Earning extra income at home in these recessionary times has become an urgent matter for thousands of families. But, with so many to choose from, which are the best programs to join? Here are three reasons why, if at all possible, you should choose a residual income affiliate program.

1. Like fleas on a dog.

Once, I heard a very successful businessman say that lawyers, doctors, dentists and accountants are a dime a dozen, but good ones are hard to find.

Affiliate programs are like that... like fleas on a dog, or a dime a dozen. All of them promise to make you rich by next Tuesday!

But the reality? Most affiliate products sell rather slowly, if they sell at all.

Check out the Clickbank stats for any of their product categories. At any given time, only a few are selling really well, and many of those perhaps for only a short time.

2. So... does affiliate marketing not live up to its promises?

Affiliate reselling is still an incredible business to be in. It can be tremendous fun as well as profitable. But understand that the affiliate industry is like every other. There are only a handful of market leaders; everyone else lags behind them. That's true across all businesses.

In fact, affiliate marketing is one of the very best businesses for you to be in if you are serious about earning extra income at home, especially in these recessionary times.

What you must do is to find a combination of profitability and stability over the long haul.

A residual income affiliate program can give you just that!

Think for a moment about gym memberships. The gym owner could charge the public a fee for each visit to the gym. But... he knows better.

They know they can sell you a year's membership, offer you a whacking great discount on the daily charge, and still make money.

A membership website operates on the same principle.

Any membership site could sell their products and services to the public on a once per sale basis, kind of like a daily door charge at the gym. But it is more profitable for them to sell their products and services for less up front in return for a long term membership. They make far more money, and over a long period.

3. What does this mean for you?

Membership sites need affiliates like any other digital product seller. They can offer you substantial commissions for selling as many of their memberships as you can.

Imagine selling gym memberships door to door.

However, the entire planet is your market, not just the tiny portion of the globe you can reach going door to door.

And best of all, you get paid again, and again, and again.

Suppose you work with a membership site that charges $30.00 per month and pays you a mere 50% commission. Fifteen dollars may not seem very exciting to you.

But what is each membership worth to you in the longer run? Suppose the average membership lasts six months. That's 6 times $15.00 = $90.00.

That means you make $90.00 per sale. Multiply that by a modest number of sales per month, say 20. Nope, you are not rich on $1800.00 per month... but isn't that enough to hold your interest?

Isn't that enough for you to see the possibilities?

The average affiliate program is just... average. A good residual income affiliate program towers above the competition, in my view. Most affiliate reseller programs lack the ability to keep selling more than a short period. We need to look for good membership programs with a record of good, consistent sales. Really earning extra money at home requires us to look beyond the sale we may make today, and look at how a program performs over the long haul.
