Small is still beautiful The new person needs to start out small. The affiliate product creator almost always provides you with some marketing tools to get you going. Use them! These tools and materials are generally along the lines of a full sales page, plus some banner ads, text ads and email text you can send to a list. These are often of very high quality, and have been well researched and tested. The newbie should just use these as is. You are just starting out, and you need to get comfortable with the basic principle of affiliate marketing before you develop your own marketing tools. And that principle is? Find a product and get traffic to the sales page. That's it. Start out small so you can get very familiar with the traffic process, and start making some sales commissions along the way. 2. Start out cheap. Keep in mind you are not earning money yet, so there is little to waste. You will never earn real money by going into debt from the very start! Let every step in your learning process provide the funding for the next step. Until you're playing in the big leagues, you will not be able (for example) to run an expensive PPC campaign and expect to make a profit. In your articles, provide useful advise to the reader, and tell it from your own personal perspective. Don't just clone all the other marketers who are just trying to get a sale. So, be polite when you first join a forum. Get to know the leaders in the group. Be helpful, say please and thank you, and whatever else your mother might have taught you! If you win over the people first, some sales are likely to follow. 3. Lay the groundwork for your empire. You have been patient; you have used your resources wisely. By consistently marketing with articles and in forums, you have become an online presence, someone whom people are starting to trust as someone who knows what they are talking about. Only now do you build your own website. There are two reasons behind this. One is that you now have to "build your brand"--- (You, Inc.)--- and the other is to have a sign up box for people to subscribe to your newsletter. Use a free report, or a free piece of software or other valuable item as "bait" to induce people to sign up. Lists are incredibly valuable. These are people who have already demonstrated an interest in your niche and related products. Be in no doubt you can make a ton of money being an affiliate, but you are not truly in business for yourself until you have your own mailing list of people who have gotten to know you, and to whom you can sell over and over and over again. To summarize: Start out small. Use the marketing materials given to you. Build your image and your reputation slowly in articles and forums. Then use that hard won reputation to really build your brand and your business. Expect to fail from time to time. It's all part of the learning process.
