Definition

Pay per click marketing or PPC is an advertising tool used online by businesses and companies and even websites to promote and introduce their products to internet users.

The usual advertising we see in the real world is in the form of billboards, television and radio commercials and print ads. Payment schemes in these kinds of advertising may vary according to how they are done. In the case of television and radio, it may be paid according to the length of the ad or how often it appears on the media. In print or billboards, it may depend on the size and the space used up.

In comparison, advertising in the online world is done by allotting a space in websites for the ads and links of the businesses. This kind of advertisement is usually done through Google Adwords.

Once a business puts an advertisement on a website, the impact of the ad cannot be truly determined, and in this case, advertising cost becomes an issue. Paying for an ad which the impact is not very significant to the business would mean losing a fair amount of money to advertising. This is why pay per click was conceptualized, and it introduces the concept that businesses will only pay the website owners if the ad is clicked.

History of Pay Per Click

Pay per click was started by Jeffrey Brewer in 1998. He designed the pay per click marketing scheme and started out a company of 25 people. Pay per click was then known as Goto.com and later became Overture, which was later acquired by Yahoo!

Brewer was responsible for the pay per click concept that is popularly known today. It was in 1999 that Google also introduced an innovation in online advertising but it was in 2000 that Google Adword was introduced. At that time, it still uses the scheme of paying advertisements per thousand impressions. Google Adword now uses the pay per click system of advertising.

It was in the year 2002 that pay per click was introduced formally as an advertising concept. Since then, it has been widely used by online businesses and website owners in earning money online.
